Why is a career in foodservice the right fit for you?

Foodservice is more than a career for me. As a child, I had a passion for food and people. I used to cook at eight, make menus, and it's just a place where we connected after a busy day. As I got older, I got into the career of foodservice. I love the fast-paced environment. I'm able to be creative and, most importantly, impact people through the food we provide. So, as I grow in my career, especially in healthcare, I realize foodservice isn't just meals, it's about healing. Being able to provide a positive experience for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments is just fulfilling to me. This industry allows me to serve my passion every day.

Why did you choose to earn your CDM, CFPP credential? 

Although I was already a director prior to getting my CDM, CFPP, I believe that the leadership when earning my CDM, CFPP should always be backed by knowledge and credibility. Of course, I already had the experience. My journey wasn't traditional. I went to culinary school, I was a chef, and I just worked my way up from the kitchen into leadership. So, I think my CDM, CFPP was a way to solidify my experience with formal training and industry standards. I wanted to ensure I wasn't just leading based on experience. It just helps me be an overall well-rounded leader.

What ANFP tools have helped you get acclimated in your career?

I believe ANFP has provided invaluable resources that supported both transitioning and continuing growth. I believe I was already receiving e-mails from ANFP, but just to be part of it, and now having my CDM, CFPP, the educational materials have been wonderful. ANFPConnect is also great with the open discussions and being able to connect with other leaders in the field.

What are you looking forward to most in your career as a CDM, CFPP?

I would say just to continue growing and developing others to lead in foodservice. I'm excited to expand my impact within my current organization and the community in the industry overall. I want to mentor others and continue improving the patient and customer experience to create pathways for others to grow. I continue to elevate the standard of care and service we provide.

What advice would you give other young professionals or those searching to build a new career in the foodservice industry?

I would say stay consistent and open to growth. Just know when you start, you don't have to have it all figured out because I know I didn't. Have a willingness to learn and keep pushing through by taking advantage of opportunities. Invest in yourself and invest in your growth. Foodservice is a place where you can grow into leadership if you stay committed.
