Why did you decide to become a CDM, CFPP?
I started working at a facility when I was 16 years old. I learned every position in the dietary department. I was encouraged to take the CDM, CFPP course by my dietitian, Ann Gallagher.
What are your main responsibilities in your current position?
Assessing new admissions for nutritional needs, attending care plan meetings, making rounds at mealtimes, and so much more.
How do you organize your time at work to make sure you accomplish all your responsibilities?
I have a daily routine I try to follow to meet the nutritional needs of my residents.
What is an example of an innovative way you have made change at your facility and how did you implement it?
Transitioning from a meal tray line service to a full restaurant style dining experience.
What was your first job in the foodservice industry?
I started in 1978 at a facility in Fort Wayne, IN, washing pots and pans.
Who has been your biggest mentor in foodservice and how have they helped shape your career?
My first dietitian, Ann Gallagher. She encouraged me then, and where I am today.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your position and how do you handle them?
Earning the trust of residents' families that you are taking care of their nutritional needs.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Talking to my residents daily and making them smile. Also, giving hugs as needed.
How do you stay up to date with current innovations and trends?
Going to meetings and webinars, and reading articles from Nutrition & Foodservice Edge magazine.How do you envision the foodservice industry changing in the next few years?
We will explode with the baby boomers.What is your advice to those just getting started in the foodservice industry?
