HIEFSS (Hospital Institution Educational Food Service Society) was organized in April of 1969 at Dakota Hospitals in Fargo, ND. The society was formed to aid hospitals and other nursing facilities to better meet the individual nutritional needs of patients, residents, students, etc. The main objectives of the society were to promote improved nutrition and improve practices in food service in schools, hospitals, and other institutions that provide foods to individuals and groups. In 1984 the organization HIEFSS became the North Dakota Association of Nutrition & Foodservice Professionals.
